SB PATEL PREDICTS CHAMPS

HOF Requirements: Be The Best for a few or Above Average for..ever

27 07 2011

Netherlands-born pitcher Bert Blyleven was a model teammate and has been a great ambassador for baseball.

But, does astonishing longevity now qualify you as a Hall Of Fame pitcher?

Things done changed!

Bert won 20 games once (20-17), never won a CY Young, and averaged 34 starts and 12 losses per year, but had an incredibly long 24-year career.  Koufax is interesting from the other side, as he was mythically, historically, the definition of dominant for a few years, and the “just” the best pitcher in baseball for almost a decade, but then because of arthritis he was out of of baseball in 12 seasons.   So who’s a HOFer?

Here’s a look Hall of Famer, Brooklyn’s own Sandy Koufax.   Koufax, a Jewish left-hander, won the Cy Young and pitching triple crown in 3 of his final 4 seasons, and pitched 4 no-hitters in his short career.

1963: 25-5 with 306 strike-outs, 1.88 ERA, and 11 shutouts in 311 innings
1964: 19-5 with 223 strike-outs, 1.74 ERA, and 7 shutouts in 223 innings
1965: 26- 8 with 382 strike-outs, 2.04 ERA, and 27 complete games in 335.2 innings
1966: 27- 9 with 317 stike-outs, 1.73 ERA and 27 complete games in 323 innings

I guess I’ll go with both.

The Yankee Swap

22 07 2011

The Oakland A’s had beaten Sparky Anderson‘s Reds in 7 games to win the 1972 World Series. Gaylord Perry and Nolan Ryan dominated the AL with their pitching prowness. The lowly 1972 Yankees were encouraged only by their powerful CF Bobby Murcer, as they finished a disappointing 4th in their division.

In 1973, the Yankees were bought for $10 million by a Cleveland shipbuilder by the name of George Steinbrenner, but the focus in spring training was on 2 Yankee lefty pitchers. On March 5, 1973, Mike Kekich and Fritz Peterson, 2/5 of the starting rotation, held a press conference at the teams’ training camp in Fort Lauderdale, Florida to announce that they had swapped lives. The first trade under the Steinbrenner regime had been completed!

Brandon Jennings – From Compton to Rome

21 11 2008

jennings-in-rome

The Man: Brandon Jennings.  6’2″ point guard from Los Angeles, CA.  Left handed.  Cousin of NBA point guard Marcus Williams.

Averaged 35.5 points, 7.5 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 4.0 steals per game in his senior year of high school.   Earned high school basketball’s most prestigious award including the 2008 Naismith High School Basketball Player of the Year.

Jennings is the first player to play for a European team rather than play for a college team since the NBA’s age restriction was implemented.

The Contract: Jennings has a three-year contract for a guaranteed $1 million from Virtus Roma, but he has an option to enter the NBA draft after Year 1 and 2 of the deal.  Jennings’ also signed a four-year contract with Under Armour that will pay him comparably to the top three picks in the 2008 NBA draft.

Their dedication to Jennings’ marketing is exemplified here

But, as Jennings says, ‘The focus in Italy is on winning.  If you don’t win, you might not get paid’

Click the jump for more info and a jaw-dropping highlight video of Jennings.
