The Yankee Swap

22 07 2011

The Oakland A’s had beaten Sparky Anderson‘s Reds in 7 games to win the 1972 World Series. Gaylord Perry and Nolan Ryan dominated the AL with their pitching prowness. The lowly 1972 Yankees were encouraged only by their powerful CF Bobby Murcer, as they finished a disappointing 4th in their division.

In 1973, the Yankees were bought for $10 million by a Cleveland shipbuilder by the name of George Steinbrenner, but the focus in spring training was on 2 Yankee lefty pitchers. On March 5, 1973, Mike Kekich and Fritz Peterson, 2/5 of the starting rotation, held a press conference at the teams’ training camp in Fort Lauderdale, Florida to announce that they had swapped lives. The first trade under the Steinbrenner regime had been completed!

In the USA’s major revenue generating team sports, the athletes are of course all male, as are the coaches.   But what about their agents?

Former pitching great John Smoltz, basketball champion Doc Rivers, and NY Mets’ Jeff Francoeur all started their careers in Georgia, and are all represented by one of ATL’s finest - Molly Fletcher .  Get em girl!

Chicks dig the long ball

Whats the problem with PEDs?  Seriously?

Babe Ruth never faced the best pitchers from the Negro League, let alone the star pitchers from DR and around the world.  Hank Aaron, 25-time All Star, played on a field in Milwaukee that was 315 ft to Left Field and 315 ft to Right Field.

Times were different, competition was different, of course steroids, the clear, the cream, dust, juice, or dropping squares of Acid may all help increase performance, reduce anxiety, speed up recovery, but they only help great players realize their full potential.  The same way well informed training staffs, studying game film, improving workout regimes, encouraging healthier diets also help players – they dont make bad players great.   Nobody is putting Bret Boone in the Hall of Fame because of his 3 great years.   Bonds and McGwire are legends.   Period, no asterisk.

Here’s a classic Nike commercial.

12 05 2009

milano

Any questions??

Alyssa Milano is a successful actress, sex symbol, fashionista, and young entrepreneur.  She’s famous for her role on “Who’s the Boss” and “Charmed”, and has stayed busy as a businesswoman, with her celebrity networking company,  and her popular website .

Here we will look carefully at Milano….and at the many ways she has managed to stay relevant and broaden her brand and audience by creatively using the long arm of sport.

Of course, maybe most famously, Milano is known to have a thing for pitchers…

In March 2009, Alyssa released her book, “Safe at Home: Confessions of a Baseball Fanatic.” Dodgers’ manager Joe Torre wrote the book’s Foreword. (The book is basically is a retrospective focusing on how the game has influenced her life. She’s warned that it’s anything but a tell-all about her relationships with star players such as Brad Penny and Carl Pavano.)

Alyssa Milano is blurring the lines between sports and hollywood, opening the baseball market to more women by introducing lines of fashion and jewelery, and overall broadening the audience and interest in sports by being so damn sexy!   Awesome!  We neeed it!
